The SAFE Center launched its new portfolio of afterschool trafficking prevention programs with an event celebrating the resilience of youth in our community. Youth survivors of trafficking, relatives of survivors, and at-risk youth gathered with SAFE Center staff to set personal goals and participate in group learning exercises.

During the event, participants engaged with SAFE Center staff to explore the history of Black communities in the United States, learn about Know Your Rights resources, and discuss best practices for emotional well-being. A brief history lesson led by Case Manager, Julia Aviles Zavala, highlighted how individuals and community coalitions have created change and demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity. Additionally, the Director of the SAFE Center’s Mental Health team, Delmy Alvayero, led an informal conversation on recognizing emotions in difficult situations, identifying triggers for challenging emotions, and managing stress safely.

Following these discussions, students collaborated on vision boards that outlined their personal hopes for the future—an important exercise in building confidence and setting structured goals to reduce vulnerabilities to human trafficking. Feedback from attendees indicated that they found the history and resources valuable and enjoyed the opportunity to express their aspirations through art.

By envisioning a focused and positive future, youth can develop the motivation needed to make healthy choices. The SAFE Center’s future afterschool programming will continue to emphasize human trafficking prevention while fostering personal growth and empowerment.
