The SAFE Center’s My Life My Choice program at a high school in Silver Spring, MD, is equipping young girls with tools to recognize and prevent human trafficking. This 10-module curriculum creates a safe space where participants engage in open discussions, hear survivor stories, and learn practical strategies to avoid exploitative situations.
“The My Life My Choice curriculum is crucial because it empowers young girls to take control of their own futures,” said Tanejah Jones, one of the facilitators and Senior Program Manager/Clinical Therapist at the SAFE Center. “By using storytelling and real-life survivor experiences, we help these students build awareness and resilience against trafficking.”
Each week, eight students participate in interactive sessions led by Jones and Julie Resendiz, the SAFE Center’s Bilingual Therapist. The program covers topics such as:
- Healthy relationships – understanding boundaries and mutual respect
- Recognizing manipulation – identifying tactics used by traffickers
- Realities of Trafficking – dispelling myths and addressing vulnerabilities
The supportive environment allows students to ask questions, share experiences, and build the confidence to make informed decisions.
The impact of My Life My Choice extends beyond the classroom. By equipping young girls with knowledge and awareness, the program encourages participants to share what they have learned with their peers and communities. This ripple effect strengthens community resilience and empowers more young people to protect themselves from trafficking.
Education is a powerful tool in preventing human trafficking. The SAFE Center remains committed to expanding programs like My Life My Choice to safeguard and inspire the next generation.
