At the beginning of May, 65 girls joined the SAFE Center for an engaging leadership retreat experience focused on confidence, awareness, and personal growth. By building awareness, strengthening self-worth, and educating participants on recognizing unsafe situations, the retreat helps reduce vulnerability to exploitation and human trafficking.
Tanejah Jones, the lead event facilitator and the SAFE Center’s Senior Program Manger and Clinical Therapist shared, “I had the privilege of guiding conversations and witnessing young women step into a deeper understanding of their value and voice.”
A highlight of the day was keynote speaker, Shamere McKenzie, who led a powerful session titled “You Are Not for Sale: Knowing Your Power and Protecting Your Future.” Her message emphasized the importance of self-worth, recognizing unsafe situations, and making informed decisions, especially in digital spaces. She challenged participants to think critically about the world around them, while staying grounded in their identity and values.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in a dynamic career panel, an interactive “Girl Talk” workshop, a thought-provoking session titled “So, You’ve Decided to Date,” and a vision board experience where participants brought their future goals and aspirations to life. These sessions created space for reflection and honest dialogue, allowing participants to connect their lived experiences to practical tools they can use moving forward.
The SAFE Center was also joined by dedicated community partners, including Employ PG, Coaching Salud Holistica, and Community Crisis Services, Inc. (CCSI), who provided valuable resources and information to support continued growth beyond the event. Their presence reinforced the importance of community in helping young people navigate challenges and access opportunities.
One youth reflected anonymously, sharing they learned “how to stay safe online and know that I am everything I stand for. I am important and I need to remember that.” Her words captured the essence of the day, building awareness while strengthening confidence from within.
As the other lead facilitator, Delmy Alvayero, the SAFE Center’s Director of Clinical Services, found the experience both powerful and inspiring. “When young women are given the knowledge and space to recognize their worth, they begin to move with clarity, confidence, and intention.”
This event served as a meaningful reminder that investing in young women’s development is essential. When equipped with the right tools, support, and information, they are prepared to protect their futures, prevent violence including human trafficking, and lead with purpose.
